Mgr. Jan Volec, Ph.D

In collaboration with colleagues, he has solved (and thus confirmed or refuted) several famous conjectures (Lovász-Szegedy, Erdős-Sós, Heckman-Thomas) that had puzzled mathematicians worldwide for years. After completing his master’s studies, he ventured abroad, gaining experience at renowned institutions. Following recovery from a serious motorcycle accident, he returned to the Czech Republic.

He now works at the Czech Technical University (ČVUT), specifically at the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering. He is an expert in graph theory and combinatorics. He studied at Charles University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (Matfyz) and earned a dual doctorate in mathematics and computer science at the University of Warwick and Université Paris Diderot. As a postdoctoral researcher, he worked at ETH Zurich, McGill University in Montreal, Emory University in Atlanta, and the University of Hamburg.

He has received several significant grants and awards. He lectures on graph theory, linear programming, coding theory, and game theory.
