 Dieter Vollhardt

Professor Emeritus, University of Augsburg

Prof. Dieter Vollhardt is a distinguished theoretical physicist whose work has had a lasting impact on condensed matter physics, particularly on the theory of strongly correlated electron systems. After studying physics at the University of Hamburg, he carried out research at the University of Southern California and later held positions at the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics in Munich.

He completed his Habilitation at the Technical University of Munich and subsequently was Director at the Institute of Theoretical Physics at RWTH Aachen University before joining the University of Augsburg, where he served as Chair of Theoretical Physics III from 1996 to 2018.

He is now Professor Emeritus. His research has focused on strongly correlated electron systems, magnetism, disordered quantum systems and the normal and superfluid phases of helium-3. He is one of the key contributors to dynamical mean-field theory, a central approach in the modern theory of correlated materials. With Peter Wölfle, he co-authored The Superfluid Phases of Helium 3. His honours include the Europhysics Prize, the Max Planck Medal, the Ernst Mach Medal, the Feenberg Memorial Medal and an honorary doctorate from the University of Warsaw.
