After graduating from the Faculty of Paediatrics of Charles University in 1963, he joined the Faculty of Pathological Physiology as a research aspirant, where he worked during his studies. In 1965 he transferred to the Institute of Physiology of the then Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, where he works today; in 1990 - 1995 he was its director, until 2005 head of the Department of Developmental Cardiology, in 2004 - 2012 he was responsible for the Center for Research of Heart and Vascular Diseases. He was Chairman of the Coordinating Council of Doctoral Degree Programs in Biomedicine at Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (until 2015).
His area of scientific interest is experimental cardiology, especially the issue of the resistance of the heart muscle to oxygen deficiency during development. He is the author of more than 280 scientific publications, two monographs and editor of 6 monographs. He is a holder of a number of domestic and foreign scientific awards, inter alia honorary medals J.E.Purkyně and G.J. Mendel AS CR, Libensky medal Cs. the Society of Cardiology and the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences; from 1993 to 1998 he was a member of the World Committee of the International Society for Heart Research, from 2015 to 2018 he was president of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences.
He is married, has two sons and three grandchildren. His interests include history, theater and sport.
