The Elegance of the Molecule
The Dejvice Theatre's production The Elegance of the Molecule is inspired by the life and research of Professor Antonín Holý, who did so much for the excellent reputation of Czech science in the world. He discovered many antivirals that are still used today to treat HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and herpes. The production weaves together the story of Antonín Holý and of other significant figures of science and business such as Erik De Clercq, John C. Martin, Michael Riordan and others, who cleared the way for Holý's elegant molecules to save the lives of millions of patients around the world. The play was named the best premiered play of 2018 and was created with the support and financial contribution of the Neuron Endowment Fund for the Support of Science.
"Otto Wichterle had his famous story about building a machine to spin the first contact lenses out of a Merkur construction set. Petr Zelenka's play looks for that kind of "Merkur" in the life of the chemist Antonín Holý."
