Neuron Club: from altermagnetism to the stars

They were the first to theoretically predict the existence of a brand new category of materials, the so called altermagnets. They have experimentally verified the discovery this year. An international team of scientists led by physicist Tomáš Jungwirth is behind this revolutionary discovery, which might find use in the most sophisticated chips of the future in the auto industry, AI applications, robots and the most efficient computers. Groundbreaking discoveries in physics and the newest findings in astrophysics were the main theme of the April Neuron Club.

Could this significant discovery of Tomáš Jungwirth lead to Czech Republic’s first Nobel Prize in physics?

“We awarded Tomáš Jungwirth Neuron Award for a major scientific discovery in physics already in 2018, because we knew he was on his way to an extraordinary discovery. That was confirmed this year. It is such a crucial discovery that it is more than probable he will receive the Nobel Prize in physics for it”  said Monika Vondráková, director and co-founder of the Neuron Foundation.

The Neuron Club took place April 23, 2024 in Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.
